Travel Vaccines

Elixir Travel & Yellow Fever Clinic

Going abroad?

Have a safe journey knowing you have had your travel vaccines at Elixir Travel Clinic.

Plan your vaccines at least one month before travel to avoid disappointment.

Vaccines contain extracts or inactivated forms of bacteria or viruses that cause disease. These altered forms of the organisms stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against them which work to fight disease and infections. The antibodies last a specified period of time. After this time if you are at continued risk of infection a booster dose of the vaccine  may be required.

Vaccines are usually injected to the muscle of the upper arm and are generally well tolerated. However there are some groups of people where extra caution is advised.

1. Pregnancy: Live vaccines should not be routinely given to pregnant women because of possible harm to the unborn child. However, where there is significant harm to the unborn child of disease for example Yellow Fever, the need for vaccination should be considered.

2. Breast Feeding: Most vaccines can be administered safely to breast feeding women. However immunity does not pass to the child through its mother's milk.

3. Acute illness: If someone is suffering from serious illness or high fever. Those suffering with minor illness without fever  may proceed vaccination.

4. Poor Immune System: These are people who have recently undergone radiotherapy, chemotherapy or are receiving immuno-suppressant drugs such as steroids. Inactivated vaccines are not dangerous to these patients but may be ineffective and live vaccines may cause harm so should not be administered.

5. HIV infection: The Department of Health has advised that HIV positive patients can safely receive certain inactivated vaccines e.g. Polio, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Typhoid, and Hepatitis B. However they may have a sub-optimum immune response. Re-immunisation may be necessary in some cases and specialist advice should be obtained. Live virus vaccines should not be routinely administered to patients with HIV infection. HIV infected patients who will be at risk of exposure to Yellow Fever should seek specialist medical advice regarding Yellow Fever vaccination.

The Department of Health also advise that HIV positive patients travelling to a country where there is no risk of exposure to Yellow Fever but a Yellow Fever certificate is required for entry, should obtain a letter of exemption from their doctor or specialist. It would be prudent to ascertain beforehand that this would be acceptable to the country they are planning to visit.

6. Allergy- to Aluminium hydroxide, Neomycin, Polymyxin B, Streptomycin, Egg or previous allergy to the vaccine in the past. These people should be vaccinated with close supervision and emergency facilities.
