This condition mainly affects young adults but can be distressing when it occurs later in life. It may affect the face, back, chest, shoulders. The disorder is caused by overactivity of the hair/sebum gland unit. This causes excess oil production, gland blockage resulting in blackheads, whiteheads, spots, nodules and cysts.

Acne occurs as a result of overgrowth in bacteria which live in the skin and in addition the effect of our hormones. Acne may also occur in women with Polycystic Ovary syndrome, people taking medication (ie contraception and steroids).

Treatment aims to treat the bacteria using different antibiotics, manage hormones in women and reduce the hair/sebum unit activity.

At Elixir we we assess your skin then suggest a treatment regimen which consists of lotions/gel for use on the skin and oral treatment. Results can be seen between 6weeks and 3months.
