There a different forms of Eczema, which may occur at different stages in life.
Seborrhoeic Eczema affects infants but may also affect adults. It is characterised with scaling, redness and mild itching on teh scalp, around the nose, behind teh ears and central chest. It is thought there is a fundal basis to this type of Eczema.
Atopic Eczema starts some months after birth. It is found in families who suffer Asthma, hayfever or eczema. It is characterised with skin redness, dryness and itching which is suceptible to infection. It usually resolved by early teens. Sometimes external triggers can be identified for example food triggers, detergents/soaps and pets.
Pompholyx eczema occurs on the palms and soles. It appears as small fluid filled itchy blisters. It may be triggered by stress.
Discoid Eczema is more common in smokers. It appears as a red itchy circular patch whicch is dry.
Venous Eczema affects older patients legs. It is associated with varicose veins and swollen legs (due to heart disease, lymphatics or kidney). it is very dry, itchy and red. The skin often becomes infected and after long term scratching becomes very thick and woody in texture.
Contact / irritant Dermatitis. This type of Eczema occurs as a result of the skin comiing into contact with a chemical or substance. The rash is often localised to the point of contact ie the wrist because of leather or dyes in a watch strap or Eczema on teh neck due to nickel in an alloy necklace. It may be something you have been in contact with for some time or only just come in to contact with. Often the substance is found in the workplace or home. you may need a patch test to determine which substance is causing the Eczema.
