Vitiligo

This is an immune disorder affecting our pigment cells (melanocytes) which give us the colour in our skin. It results in irregularly shaped white patches on the scalp, hair, lips and skin. It can cause significant embarassment when it appears in highly visible areas.

The destruction of pigment cells makes the skin more prone to the effects of the sun. Sun protection in the form of protective clothing, avoiding the midday sun and use of sunscreens are highly recommended.
